
If you’re a registered member with NHIF, checking your status to get your details is simple. In this article, we will be looking at the steps to checking NHIF Status.
Checking NHIF status through SMS number 1550
- Open your message app and create a new message
- Type “ID” then hit the space bar, and type your ID number (e.g ID 12345670)
- send to 1550
- Wait for an SMS confirmation
Checking NHIF status through USSD Code
- Dial *155#
- Chose the language to continue with
- Select option 3 “other services”
- Enter your ID number
- A one-time password (OTP) will be sent to your phone via SMS
- Enter the OTP to proceed
- Go to option 6 “my status”
Checking NHIF status via the NHIF app
- Download the app on Google Playstore or App store
- Enter your ID number
- A one-time password (OTP) will be sent to your phone via SMS
- Once the process is complete go to “other status”
- Select “my status”
You can also check your status through the NHIF portal by selecting “select care”

How to change outpatient facility
- Dial *155#
- Go to option 3 “other services”
- Enter your ID number and wait for OTP to be sent to your phone via SMS
- Select option 3 “change out-patient facility”
In fact, the process is the same if you want to choose your outpatient facility. In this case, you’ll select option 2 “choose out-patient facility”. You can also change or choose your outpatient facility using the NHIF app or through the portal by going to “select care”.
NHIF Registration Requirements for Self-Employed Members
Visit your nearest NHIF branch or Huduma Center and carry;
- A copy of your National ID
- 2 colored passport-sized photos
- A copy of the spouse’s ID (if applying for a family cover)
- Sworn affidavit or marriage certificate if you’re adding a spouse
- Copy of your child/ children’s Birth Certificates (or a birth notification for children below 6 months)
- Colored passport size photo(s) of spouse and children
- Lastly, Kshs 500 for the informal sector
NHIF Registration online
- To register, visit the NHIF registration portal http://www.nhif.or.ke/healthinsurance/registeronline/
- Click on the self-employed icon and proceed to fill in the required fields
- Next, attach a copy of your ID and passport photo
- To include your spouse on the cover, provide his/her details in the space provided and attach copies of their passport photo
How Much Will You Be Required to Pay for Initial NHIF Registration
Following your initial registration, you are required to pay Ksh 1500. This will store your card for three months until it is activated after 60 days (2 months). By the same token, your NHIF card becomes active 60 days after you register.
